I'm a bit confused if this is supposed to be like a student remake of what we did the first day of class w/ the DV in a day, or if we are supposed to create a DV in a day with the class, or just us 4.

If so, I'm thinking we can come up with an idea that we can all relate to. I'm assuming the 4 of us (2 of which being Canadian) we could do something about maybe crossing the border or maybe something that is going on in the news atm. (relatively local)

I'm just throwing ideas out lol

I am not sure either

Hey guys,

I'm a bit unsure myself, but, based on what we have done in class so far I think it is to be short clips on a topic of our choosing that allows everyone to participate.

I will clarify this with Keith.

Perhaps a good topic to do as the first group would be "How We Learn"

We are all students in the Education Faculty thus have prior knowledge we can all draw from. It also incubuses the different strategies this course has presented to us so far.

I love the How we Learn idea....but there may be others you come up with.

The idea is simple.... you come up with a movie in which you start it (and maybe finish it). think of genre

infocommercial
movie trailer
drug ad
psa
fake show

your job is to prep everyone else to film their parts....

Maybe a movie trailer.....

it opens with a title and short voiceover...
"coming to theaters next summer, How We Learn..... you'll be amazed as you learn all about learning. Including...........

(and then instruct people to either film up front with one cam or give cams to groups (maybe a better idea) to go out and film a ten second scene in which they demonstrate a learning strategy...

you finish with a short voiceover

"so you dont want to miss the film educational critics are raving about. this film is not rated and no one educators were hurt in its making"

the trick is creating the space and expectations for your students to fill in the gaps, making it easy to understand and easy to film an idea.

you can pick any content
learning
science
math
english
business
general ed
history
culture

that doesnt matter to me as the process....

Im going camping tomorrow so Ill check tonight and when I get back on Monday to facilitate your ideas........

peace,
keith

Ok, so if we do something based on say, the basic principles of education as a whole, because most everyone will be in different fields, we can make that 'movie preview' appeal to all classmates, then go out and create their own short piece based on how they could teach a class a lesson/certain topic? This way it leaves ideas open to most students and we can still use it as an acceptable means for the movie.

Kinda like teaching strategies or something...

Yes Dan, just give them a little bit more of a concrete idea of what they should film. Saying go film what it looks like to teach could be confusing and you could end up with tons of footage. Maybe ten-twenty seconds where you illustrate one teaching strategy. Whatever you settle in on, the idea should be easy to understand for your audience. Remember they only have 15 minutes to plan and 30 minutes to film.

Be sure you prepare your piece before class. If you are doing a voice over record it or send it to my voicemail, if you are going to put in just titles for the beginning we can do that in class but if you plan on filming something it might be a good idea to bring that in ready to go.

Even better, if you can model one idea (of the middle, the part they will film) that might help them "see"" what kind of shot your looking for. The tirck is always goldilocks, don't give them too much, but don't give too little and kill creativity, make it "just right"

I think this is a great idea...we can divide the class into subject and send them out to explain how history students learn history etc etc. I think this will create genres within our video. we can do a movie or like a documentary. I was also thinking of like a "funneist home videos" type where it goes back and forth between the types of learning and at the end the "audience" can cast in their votes and stay tuned for the results after a word from our sponsors" thing.

Hey Dan,

I like the idea and think both of our thoughts on how we should go forward are very compatible.

As far as the production I really like Keith's Idea of a BlockBuster Summer Movie (partially because he laid out a very nice template for us to follow - and - because who doesn't enjoy a 300 million dollar summer flick)

If we can hammer out and confirm the topic and brainstorm the different topic areas for the other groups (so that we can give suggestions if we need to help give some guidance as to the direction we take) I will gladly start in on making the intro for the Movie.

Keep me Posted

Kim!!!! you posted as I was Posting!!! hmmm... AFV is a great idea too... that could also be very compatible with American Idol voting!
I think one thing that is important is to allow the groups to decide on the topic themselves and report it to us - it will give them a sense of control over something we control - ie. we are the executive producers of this film/show

Ok so, I guess it may be a bit more user friendly to do a

" Coming June, twenty-ten, a bunch of adventurers are learning that its not so easy... to teach!! And we're about to find out, exactly just how challenging this is! "

^Think SouthPark where the episode is either about Stan Marsh got his bicycle towed away, or the one where Rob Schneider is... a stapler... or a carrot. lol- if you Youtube it.. or better yet...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DEUjleBtQlI

That's the voice I'm talking about. It's easy, comical, and gets the point across as not too serious, but having fun with the importance of pointing out different ideas.

so... yeah lol

I like it...do we need anything for class? like props or anything?

NS said...

I don't think we need any props.

I will post the intro to my website once it uploads on youtube.

Does anyone want to put together some ideas to have for the class/prepare an explanation of what the video is and required parts?

Kim Murphy said...

That is an awesome intro. I wrote down ideas to tell the class...I think that dividing them into groups is a great idea, should we do it by subject and then tell them they can do content-based, general strategies, how one culture learns over another, how to teach your subject, or just shoot one strategy of learning? those are some of the ideas we all came up with in a nut shell.
